LEESER Architecture's EM Quartier Opens in Bangkok

June 9, 2015

2.7M sq ft Luxury Retail + Entertainment District features five-story waterfall, floating gardens, and automated parking

EM Quartier - one of the most anticipated luxury retail centers in South East Asia - opened in Bangkok on Friday. Designed by LEESER Architecture for The Mall Group, EM Quartier is part of a collection of malls known as the District EM, which also includes the recently renovated Emporium and future project EM Sphere. The 2.7 million square foot, $800 million mixed use project is poised to become a world class destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Working with the developer responsible for the largest shopping center in South East Asia, LEESER Architecture has created a design that evokes the synthesis of beauty and unpredictability found in both nature and urbanism. The buildings alter the pure shape of the traditional spiral, floor plates are shifted so they do not align with the floors above. These subtle imperfections provide outdoor terraces for the visitors, blurring the boundary between inside and out. The design furthers the notion of openness through the incorporation of an ample amount of glass between soft curves of the buildings.

EM Quartier is centered on the Bangkok Sky Train and comprised of retail and entertainment venues, as well as an abundance of green space. Key features include six stories of dining terraces atop a helical floor slab, an eight theater cinema complex including one Imax Theater, pedestrian streets, floating gardens and a five-story waterfall, as well as two stories of automated underground parking.

EM Quartier was honored with the 2014 Asia Pacific International Property Award for Best Commercial Architectural Design.

Wall Street Journal: New York's Double-Edged Hotel Boom

April 23, 2015

There was a time when travelers in Brooklyn and Queens struggled to find overnight shelter, thanks to the sheer paucity of hotels. Excluding a few airport inns, the New York Marriott Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1998, was the borough’s first new full-service hotel since Herbert Hoover was president. The developer, Joshua Muss, says he was often told that “a hotel in Brooklyn is a piece of pork to a kosher butcher shop.” read more at Wall Street Journal >>
