Complete renovation of two bedroom apartment near Central Park South. The client wanted to create a clean, crisp space that ‘didn’t completely erase the apartment’s original character.
LEESER Architecture created a space that is multi-directional - a careful balance between the materiality of these Southeast Asian objects that the client collected, the classical atmosphere of the existing building, and a modern, minimal, clean look and functionality.
Interior walls were removed to open the space and amenities were modernised including a glass Valcucine kitchen and central air-conditioning. The design team reproduced moldings that were unsalvageable, reinstalled existing crystal doorknobs on new resin doors, and uncovered the original cast-iron radiators. Finishes from the client’s own ‘organic’ furnishings studio in SoHo were used in the foyer, kitchen, and bathroom including custom concrete tiles and full-height doors from weathered teak with a shell inlay.
